IOM Migrants and Refugees in the Republic of Serbia

Introduction: Having in mind the increase in migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who are using the Western Balkan portion of the Eastern Mediterranean migratory route (2,000-3,000 people per day in July 2015, and 6,000 - 7,000 people per day in October 2015, as well as the insufficiency of adequate premises for their reception and care, a need for establishing additional facilities is noted. The issue of safe and secure shelter is pertinent, as increasing restrictions at certain borders, especially as increasing restrictions at certain borders – particularly after the closure of borders between Hungary and Serbia and Hungary and Croatia – will most likely lead to a longer stay within the Western Balkans for many. This issue will be accentuated with the approaching winter months, as most refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants are not prepared for cold temperatures and harsh weather conditions, having left their countries of displacement during times of warm weather without adequate clothes or shelter options. A lack of shelter options has resulted in many sleeping outdoors, which renders them at risk of robbery, sexual and gender based violence, and other abuses.

Project objectives: The objective of the project is to ensure safe and secure shelter for refugees and migrants, and protection from the above mentioned risks.

Planned activities: Refurbishment of the part in the Reception Centre Adasevci to accommodate up to 150 persons.
