EU Supports Serbia to Improve Border Management in the Context of the Migration Crisis

Introduction: The EU provides assistance to Republic of Serbia and Serbian Ministry of Interior to improve its border and migration management capabilities at the border with Bulgaria. It is funded by the EU with EUR 1 million and implemented by UN agency for Migration – International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Project objectives: The aim is to support Serbian border and migration management capabilities. This includes improved border surveillance and the combating and prevention of migrant smuggling, human trafficking and cross-border crime, in full respect of the rule of law and fundamental rights.
Planned activities in Serbia:
- Transfer of knowledge and experience of European Border Police (including representatives from Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia) to National Border
Police through organization of joint patrols in eastern border of Serbia, mainly in cities of Pirot, Zajecar and Negotin. - Improving technical capacities of Serbian Border Police through the procurement of specialized border surveillance equipment worth of EUR 380,000. This equipment encompasses sophisticated drones, endoscope and thermo vision cameras, off-road vehicle, communication devices, passport readers, specialized binoculars, etc.
