“I believe in the power of fashion to make the grim reality prettier,” says Cici after gracing the runways at Belgrade Fashion Week.
When one sees Cici strutting down the catwalk with confidence and powerful energy, there is no doubt that she carries herself like a professional model. Tall, slender, beautiful, determined, brave, she exudes in the garments everything she is as a person.
Cici comes from Burundi and is paving her own way in Serbia’s eclectic capital city, Belgrade, with her daughter who inspires her with the ultimate motivation to thrive.
“First of all, I’m a single mother to a two-year-old. My daughter, Romy, is my source of strength,” explains Cici.
Cici has a thirst for knowledge and pushing out boundaries. Her intention is to study tourism and hospitality at Belgrade University, but while she waits to enrol, this remarkable young woman works part-time in a restaurant, raises a toddler, but still has an unwavering determination to be a part of No Nation Fashion (NFF).
NNF is a fashion brand initiated by IOM, with financial support from the European Union, that brings together the talent, creativity and artistry of people from different cultures. For Cici, being part of this initiative also means giving migrant women the space to be seen and respected, while also contributing to a creative vision through the medium of fashion.
“NNF shines a nuanced spotlight on the themes of migration, the one that is rarely seen or portrayed; of opportunities, creativity, talent, and beauty. I enjoy being a part of that opportunity”, Cici reflects on her participation at Belgrade Fashion Week.
NNF made its debut at Belgrade Fashion Week featuring the Resilient Threads collection. This fashion extravaganza highlights the willpower of people on the move, the many obstacles they face on their migrant journey, and how they translate their experiences into determination, creativity, and hope.
“Migration is an enriching force that brings diversity and prosperity to societies. The creativity and innovation that migrants such as Cici bring to the table, enhances our communities for the better. At NNF a unique synergy is created between local designers, artists, and migrants from across the Western Balkans,” said Zeynal Hajiyev, Chief of Mission at IOM Serbia.
Apart from modelling, Cici has always aspired to be a flight attendant.
“I would still like to pursue a career in this field. There is something so soothing and magnificent in working so high up in the sky, between the clouds, and having the opportunity to travel for work and see the world,” says Cici.
Cici has been living in Belgrade for nearly three years and is focused on building a fulfilling life for both her and her beloved daughter.
It is important for Cici to be a role model for her daughter and is setting the foundations for a brighter future in Serbia.
“Serbian people are very welcoming and kind. This country has provided a safe and promising environment for the two of us. I believe that here, we have a future worth fighting for.”
When asked if she would like to model again at NNF, she answers in a heartbeat with a broad smile and a resounding “Yes!”
Cici’s philosophy is that “We must keep going until we make things happen.” This is her message to all the girls and women who aspire to greater things, no matter what they are going through.
The No Nation Fashion initiative is funded by the European Union.
