Donation to the Serbian Ministry of Interior from the Government of Japan

Today, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) of the Republic of Serbia received a donation of 11 off-road vehicles, 3 vans and 68 sets of computers and printers. The donation was formally handed over to the Minister of Interior by the Ambassador of Japan, HE Juichi Takahara. In his remarks, HE Takahara stressed the importance and long-standing nature of the cooperation between Serbia and Japan in the field of migration and beyond. HE Takahara also commended the Government of Serbia for their humane treatment of the migrants in the past period. HE Takahara also commended IOM for the successful implementation of the project Support to the Border Police in Addressing Increased Migration Flows along the West Balkan Route with a total budget of 900,000 US. In addition to the purchase and delivery of the vehicles and IT equipment, the Japanese donation also covered the deployment of IOM migrant protection teams in the field and the training of Border Police staff in Humanitarian Border Management.
The Minister of Interior Mr. Nebojsa Stefanovic expressed his gratitude for the donation and stated that the donated vehicles will increase the efficiency of the Border Police work as well as the safety of the border police officers. He also added that the donated IT equipment will further increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the work with the migrants in the field. IOM was represented by its Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Western Balkans, Mr. Peter Van der Auweraert, and the Head of the IOM Office in Serbia, Ms. Lidija Markovic. Mr. Van der Auweraert thanked the Minister of Interior and the Border Police for the excellent collaboration and the Japanese Government for the faith they continue to put in IOM. He also commended Serbia for their humane management of the migration crisis, thereby setting a positive example for other countries on how to deal with mixed migration flows including stranded migrants. He stated that IOM is committed to continue supporting the Government of Serbia in respect of the migrants currently stranded in the country and migration management more broadly.
