Donation of off-road vehicles to the Serbian Border Police Directorate from Japanese emergency aid fund

In the Presevo regional center on 13 September 2016, during organized visit of the Japanese Embassy in Belgrade delegation and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Serbian Border Police Directorate received donation of  two off-road vehicles under the Project support the migrant crisis in the Western Route Balkans. The project started in October 2015 when Serbia faced major challenges in controlling irregular migration.

Chief of Serbian border police, General Milenko Bozovic, presented to the delegation of the Japanese Embassy situation in the Republic of Serbia, the measures that are being implemented, activities and responsibilities of the regional center, as well as the needs of the border police to further improve its capacities, technical and human.

The first secretary of the Japanese Embassy, Josifumi Kano stressed the importance of a well-coordinated response to the Serbian migrant crisis and stressed the importance of cooperation between Japan and Serbia, reminding on the help and donations of Japan which in previous years were aimed at providing additional support and capacity building of institutions.

Head of Office of the IOM Mission in Belgrade, Mrs. Lidija Marković, presented the project activities conducted during the previous period thanks to the contribution of the Japanese government, which were focused primarily on direct assistance to migrants, but also on providing additional support to the units of the border police that are involved in the implementation of measures in a situation of increased influx of migrants and refugees.
